Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for research initiatives of two to five years.

The objective of the Exploration stream of the NFRF program is to support high risk, high reward and interdisciplinary research that is not easily supported through funding opportunities currently offered by the three agencies. Exploration grants aim to have a variety of types of impacts, some of which might be social, economic, scientific, artistic or cultural. Two stage Application process. The overall goal is to establish a research network to enhance social sciences and humanities research capacity in universities, in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, and in communities to fill knowledge gaps and expand the discourse for effective decision making on agri-environmental investments and actions. The research network will support knowledge mobilization and partnership research that leverage ongoing collaboration and mutual learning between academics and researchers from think tanks, institutes, the private, public (external to government) and not-for-profit sectors, etc. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Network on Sustainable Agriculture in a Net-Zero Economy will inform the NSERC/SSHRC Sustainable agriculture research initiative through, for example, information exchanges as workshops and symposiums, and in terms of identified research gaps and collaboration opportunities. The research network will collaborate with researchers in the NSERC/SSHRC Sustainable agriculture research initiative to help build research relationships and, ultimately, knowledge in this area. The research network will also interact with AAFC to ensure policy-research linkages that reflect the policy and data needs of the department.

The objective of the Transformation stream is to support large-scale, Canadian-led interdisciplinary research projects that address a major challenge with the potential to realize real and lasting change. The challenge may be fundamental, leading to a scientific breakthrough, or applied, with a social, economic, environmental or health impact. Projects are expected to be world-leading, drawing on global research expertise, when relevant.

Connection Grants (amounts from $7,000 to $25,000) support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes or other events or outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.  Applications may be submitted by institutions (e.g., university led events) or individual applicants and teams. This is a 2:1 matching fund opportunity (SSHRC:entity match).

The British Academy is inviting proposals for the next round of its Knowledge Frontiers: International Interdisciplinary Research Projects programme. The call is open to early career researchers, active in any discipline within the humanities or the social sciences and offers the opportunity to develop and lead international and interdisciplinary research projects.

The DGT call aims to deepen and widen our knowledge and understanding of opportunities, challenges and crises relevant to democracy, governance and trust. The framing of this call recognizes that many disciplinary perspectives and methodologies may be brought to bear on these questions and that proposals are strengthened by inclusive and innovative collaborations across disciplinary national boundaries. The DGT call is specifically keen to identify how conditions for democracy, governance and trust to flourish can be maintained, fostered and, where needed, rebuilt and nurtured through a range of interventions and initiatives based on empirical evidence. Teams must be comprised of at least three eligible Co-Principal Investigators from at least three different participating countries. Duration of grant is up to three years.

In addition to recognizing faculty members for their contributions, the award funds bold and potentially game-changing projects that will challenge the status quo, spark change and take action to address persistent systemic barriers in the research ecosystem and academia.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), are pleased to announce a new partnership to develop the solutions required for a sustainable, resilient, and profitable agriculture and agri-food sector in the uncertain climate and net zero economy of the future. Created by the Embassy of France in Canada in 2018, the Mourou/Strickland program is a two-way mobility program; its main goal is to contribute to the creation of sustainable collaborations between Canadian and French researchers. It is intended for researchers who wish to spend 5 to 28 days with their counterpart(s), either in France or Canada, as part of a joint research project. This program is open to all research areas. It involves all provinces of Canada outside Quebec, since Quebec already has specific programs with France.

VP Research Travel Grants are provided for faculty in areas supported by SSHRC to attend conferences to present a paper (including the presentation of a poster in a poster session), to serve as a keynote speaker or in the case of faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts, to present one’s own creative work to a peer group. Awards for North American travel to a Maximum of $900 and International travel to a Maximum of $2,000.

The nomination process for this award is managed through the Dean of Graduate Studies Office.

The Government of Canada, through NSERC and SSHRC, is pleased to announce a joint research funding initiative, led by the US National Science Foundation, for use-inspired research addressing global challenges in climate change and clean energy. NSF Global Centres is a collaborative effort among NSERC, SSHRC, NSF, Australia's Commonwealth Science and Innovation Research Organization, and the UK Research and Innovation. This award would be suitable for spending a sabbatical year in Germany. An academic in Germany with whom you would collaborate during your sabbatical could nominate you for this award.

To carry out long-term research (6-24 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host.

To sponsor a 6 to 18 month research stay at a research institution in Germany. The fellowship is flexible and can be divided up into as many as three stays within three years.

Scientists and scholars from all non-European countries, who completed their doctorates less than 18 years ago, who are internationally recognized for their achievements in the field of applied research, and who in future are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements which will have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work, are eligible to be nominated for a Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award.

Academics of all disciplines from abroad, who are internationally recognized as leaders in their field and who are expected to contribute to enhancing Germany's sustained international competitiveness as a research location in consequence of the award, are eligible to be nominated for an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.

Granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date, to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.

Excellent scientists and scholars of all nationalities who are expected to continue producing outstanding academic achievements in international collaboration are eligible to be nominated for the Max Planck Research Award.

The Konrad Adenauer Research Award honors researchers from Canada whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and beyond.

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) appoints a number of Distinguished Fellows to the roster of experts who are associated with the Foundation’s work. APF Canada is currently accepting nominations for individuals who have made significant contributions to Canada-Asia relations in one of the following areas: scholarship, public policy, business, diplomacy, arts and culture, and civil society.

VPR Major Research Project Application Preparation grants assist SFU faculty members who are applying for major external research grants (e.g., CFI, NCE or SSHRC MCRI or INE). Assistance may take the form of support salaries for personnel needed to prepare application materials, costs of travel required to meet with research collaborators, long-distance telephone/fax charges, etc. These grants do not fund research per se.

This program will build teams to address challenges requiring further research and development for solutions to meet COVID-19 related needs. The NRC will build these teams drawing on internal-to-government capacity and academic researchers who register to indicate their interest, and related areas of expertise and capabilities.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship is a competitive initiative for international undergraduates from the following countries and regions: Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Mexico, Tunisia, United Kingdom, USA, and Ukraine. From May to October of each year, top-ranked applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

This grant serves to establish collaboration between German universities and international partners. Applications must be submitted by German researchers. Researchers who have already achieved their doctorates and who are based at a German research institution in Germany or abroad can apply.All disciplines are eligible for the grant.

The goal of the Individual Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers, wishing to diversify their individual competence in terms of skill acquisition through advanced training, international and intersectoral mobility. Individual Fellowships provide opportunities to researchers of any nationality to acquire and transfer new knowledge and to work on research and innovation in Europe (EU Member States and Horizon 2020 Associated Countries) and beyond. The scheme particularly supports the return and (re)integration of European researchers from outside Europe and those who have previously worked here, as well as researchers displaced by conflict outside the EU and Horizon 2020 Associated Countries. It also promotes the career restart of individual researchers who show great potential.

The SFU-Mitacs Globalink Research Award supports international research collaboration through the mobility of graduate students (Masters & PhD) and postdoctoral fellows. The award supports short-term internships (12-24 weeks) for both inbound (to SFU) and outbound (from SFU). Priority is given to project proposals that demonstrate potential to lead to long-term and multifaceted research collaborations that advance SFU's strategic interests. The award is CAD $6000 per student (of which, $2000 needs to be contributed by SFU PI). The deadline to submit a project proposal is July 25, 2022.
