Canada – UK 2022-23 collaborative industrial research and development

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will work with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) to invest a total of up to £4 million in innovation projects. These will enable transition to net zero for the automotive, rail, or maritime transportation sectors.
The aim of this competition is to foster and support collaborative research and development (CR&D) through Canadian and UK partnerships. Your proposal must demonstrate high potential for commercialisation, address a technological challenge and target large global markets.
Eligiblity
UK registered businesses and Canadian SMEs can apply to collaborate on joint R&D projects that enable the transition to net zero for the automotive, rail, or maritime sectors.
To collaborate with the lead, your organisation must be one of the follow:
- UK registered business of any size
- UK registered academic institution
- UK registered research and technology organisation (RTO)
- Canadian SME
- Canadian research organisation
** Note: Universities cannot be the lead applicant and can only collaborate as a participant on a self-funded basis or as subcontractor.
Funding
Eligible project participants in collaborative projects selected through this call for proposals may receive funding from their respective national funding bodies. Funds will be provided in accordance with the applicable laws, regulations, rules, and procedures established by the relevant national funding bodies, country, and jurisdiction.
Non‑eligible project participants (e.g. universities, research institutes, etc., and participants from other countries) are welcome to participate on a self‑funded basis or as sub‑contractors to funded participants, according to each country's funding regulations.
Eligible Canadian SMEs or research organisation may receive up to 50% reimbursement of eligible project costs up to a maximum total funding amount of $500,000 CAD over 12 to 24 months.

How to apply
Canadian funding applicants are required to register and submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) before being eligible to apply for this competition.
The registration deadline for Canadian applicants is May 9, 2022.
